- Japan's meteorological agency and the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center have issued a tsunami warning for Japan and Russia's Pacific Coast after a powerful earthquake struck the Kuril islands.

- China has arrested two Taiwanese businessmen suspected of spying for Taipei.

- China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Li Weiyi confirmed the arrests Wednesday and said the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait has informed the suspects' families.
