第七部 第四课: to stand up someone , a stand-in
- 今天我们要给大家介绍的两个习惯用语都是以站立的 “站” 这个字為主的．我相信大家都知道 “站” 在英文裡是哪个字 Stand． Stand 这个字有许多意思，美国人也用的很多．在我查的一本字典裡， stand 这个字有六十九种不同的含义．所以，很显然，今天我们讲的只能侷限於 stand 这个字的几种用法．我们今天要讲的第一个习惯用语就是： to stand up someone． 大家可能都会说 stand up． 这不就是 “站起来” 的意思吗？是的，一点儿也没错．但是， to stand up 后面再加一个 “某人”，那它的意思就完全不同了． To stand up someone 就是 “一个人没有能按时去赴重要的约会，特别是和女朋友或男朋友的约会”．这裡要请大家注意的是， to stand up someone 也可以把最后两个字颠倒一下，成為： to stand someone up． 这种 to stand someone up 的情况甚至在举行婚礼的时候都可能发生．下面就是一个例子．这是新郎在说话：
- Mary was two hours late for our wedding and I was afraid she had stood me up. But she finally got there, her head all bandaged -- she'd been in an auto accident on her way to church!
- 这位新郎说：“我和玛丽举行婚礼的那天她迟到了两个小时．我当时真担心她不会来了，让我空等．可是后来她终於到了．她的头上包着绷带．原来她在去教堂的路上出了车祸。”
- 我们再来举个例子．有的人性子很急，在赴约的时候一分鐘也不愿意等，有的人则比较耐心．但是，不管是谁，大概没有人会喜欢每次约会你的朋友到了时间还不见人影的．下面就是一个人在说他跟他的女朋友的经歷：
- I really love Joan. We've been dating for over two years now. But I simply can't stand the way she always stands me up. Last month, I waited in front of the theater for an hour without seeing her shadow. I've finally decided to break up with her.
- 这个人说：“我实在是非常爱琼恩．我们交朋友到现在已经有两年多了．但是，她老是迟到，老让我等她，我对这一点实在受不了．上个月，我在电影院门口等了一个小时还不见她的人影．我终於决定跟她分手了。”

- 我们再来讲一个以 stand 这个字為主的习惯用语， a stand-in． 要注意的是在 stand 和 in 之间必须有一个连接号． A stand-in 很明显是一个名词．这个说法是出自好莱坞．大家都知道，电影裡的惊险动作往往是由别人来代替电影明星演的．这种代替明星的人就是 stand-in．每当明星不能参加排练的时候，那个代替他排练的人也是 a stand-in．可是， a stand-in 这种说法现在已经不仅仅侷限於代替演员的人，它已经扩大到日常生活中去，可以应用在各个方面．凡是 “一个人临时去代替别人做什麼事”，那个人就可以被称為 a stand-in．下面就是一个例子：
- The mayor was sick in bed with a sudden attack of the flu so one of the city council members had to be a stand-in for the mayor and go out to meet the governor at the airport.
- 这句话的意思是：“市政委员当中有一个人得代替市长到机场去接州长，因為市长突然感冒，病倒在床。”
- 替别人去参加某项活动本来也是正常的，难以避免的．但是，要是一个人经常担当这种角色，他恐怕也会感到厌烦．下面的例子是一个公司的副经理在向经理埋怨：
- You want me to be a stand-in for you again tonight at the dinner party? Let me tell you, I'm getting tired of being your stand-in all the time. If you don't want to perform your duties, why don't you let me take over your position.
- 这个副经理非常生气地说：“你今天又要我替你去参加晚上的晚餐会？我告诉你，你老让我去替你，我都烦死了．要是你不想担负起你的责任，那你為什麼不让位，让我来担任经理啊！”
